When designing an MBBR system, one question often comes up:
Should we add more media, or should we choose better media?
It may seem simple, but the answer is more complicated than simply increasing the media volume.
Adding more media increases the potential surface available for biofilm growth.
But if the reactor cannot provide sufficient mixing, aeration, and oxygen transfer, the additional media may not be used effectively.
Too much media can also affect circulation and create areas where carriers move poorly.
The goal is not to fill the reactor as much as possible.
The goal is to achieve the right media-to-process balance.
A good MBBR carrier should provide more than a high surface-area number.
Important factors include:
✔ Effective protected surface area
✔ Good media movement
✔ Suitable density and geometry
✔ Stable biofilm attachment
✔ Efficient oxygen and substrate transfer
✔ Mechanical and long-term durability
These factors work together to determine how effectively the available media supports biological treatment.
Instead of asking:
“How much media can we put into the reactor?”
A better question may be:
“How much biological treatment capacity can we achieve from each cubic meter of media?”
This shifts the focus from simply increasing quantity to improving overall system efficiency.
In some projects, increasing media volume may be the right solution.
In others, optimizing the carrier design, filling ratio, aeration, or mixing system may provide better results.
More media is not automatically better. Better media is not automatically better either.
The real objective is to select the right carrier and the right quantity for the specific wastewater, reactor configuration, loading, and treatment target.
Because in MBBR design, performance comes from the combination of media + biology + process conditions—not from one parameter alone.
How do you approach this balance in your MBBR projects: more media, better media, or better process design?
